Sony is attempting to revitalize their Walkman line with it's NWZ-X1000 OLED Personal Media Player. The new walkman comes prepackaged with a 16GB system that can be updated to 32GB. It features a touchable 3in AMOLED screen that displays at a resolution of 432 x 240px. Unfortunatly some early reports that the video only plays back at 320 x 240px. Despite that, supported video formats include MPEG-4, H.254 and WMV. For audio it will support MP3, WMA and ACC up to 320 kbps.
Seperating it from most of it's competitors will be it's ability to tune into FM stations. The Walkman also features a Digital Amplifier ”S-Master,” Digital Noise Canceling, Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE). It also gives the user access to WiFi, internet browsing with YouTube support and about 33 hours of listening battery life/9 hours of viewing battery life.
Currently there is no official release date in the states though most gadget bloggers are expecting to see it in the states as soon as Summer '09. It is already available in Japan and as of February Amazon UK was accepting orders for the 16GB version for around $308 and a 32GB version for about $407.
Will this make a move on Apple's iPod market? I'm not sure. It's smaller and currently priced higher than the current iPod models, but I guess anything is possible.
